The Part You Cannot See in a Quote
Cutting and programming a car key means gaining access to your vehicle and, on most modern cars, to the computer that decides whether it starts. Two quotes can describe the same job and mean very different things.
Who is accountable afterwards
A certification is held by a named person and can be withdrawn. Insurance and bonding are contracts with someone other than us. Together they mean there is somebody to answer to if the work goes wrong — which is a different thing from a promise made on the phone.
What happens to your vehicle's data
Programming a key is a transaction with your car's security system. It should be done by someone who understands what that system is doing, works to a defined procedure, and has a professional reputation attached to their name.

Straight Answers
CMAL stands for Certified Master Automotive Locksmith, the highest automotive credential awarded by the Associated Locksmiths of America. It requires a rigorous practical examination, documented years of experience and ongoing continuing education. Jerry Arnstein was the first person in North America to earn it, in 2015, and Autokey is the only ALOA CMAL certified automotive locksmith in Montreal.
Keys and remotes we supply carry a 90-day replacement warranty. If the key or remote itself fails within that period, bring it back — we replace the hardware and program the replacement at no charge. To be straight with you about the limit: the warranty covers the part we supplied. It does not cover a vehicle that keeps losing its own programming because of a fault in the car, since that is a problem in the vehicle rather than a defect in our key. If that happens we will tell you what we think is going on and what it would take to fix it.
Done carelessly, work on a vehicle's immobilizer or body control modules can leave them in a bad state — this is a real risk in our trade, not a scare story. We work to procedures designed to avoid it and use professional-grade equipment, including both manufacturer tooling and high-quality aftermarket tools we have tested in the shop. If a job carries any unusual risk on your specific vehicle, we tell you before we start.
